Spoons For Sale |
Commissions & Contact |
The
custom of giving Lovespoons originated in Wales probably as early as the
sixteenth century. The Lovespoon seems to have developed from the "cawl"
(Welsh broth or soup) spoon. Traditionally, young men would fashion intricately
carved wooden spoons and present them to a young girl, hopefully to influence
a relationship. Hence the word "spooning". The spoons
come in a variety of shapes and sizes and generally have a symbolic meaning.
Here are a few symbols and their significance:-HEART - Love and affection CHAIN LINKS - Loyalty and faithfulness TRAPPED BALL - Number of children FLOWER - Gentleness and growth DIAMOND SHAPE - Good fortune VINE/LEAVES - Long and fruitful life ANCHOR - Desire to settle down SHIELD - Safekeeping LOCK - Safekeeping HORSESHOE - Good luck CELTIC CROSS - Wales or Faith, Christening BIRDS - Lovebirds or Doves of Peace DRAGON - Welsh National Emblem or Strength Today, Welsh Lovespoons are given for all occasions, Births, Christenings, Weddings, Engagements, Anniversaries, or just a gift of Love and Affection. |
